Curved Wall at South Mains Members 27-28 June

South Mains members’ day gave us a great opportunity to work on a curved section of wall and to learn the art involved.

Gregor started by marking up the line of the curves in the existing wall before it was demolished. Once the wall was down, we set the pins and line place. Although these, as usual, gave us a guide to the line of the wall, it was more important to ensure that the stones curved round and we maintained the same distance from front to back.

It was a tricky operation and progress was quite slow. It was valuable that Gregor was, as always, diligent in ensuring we didn’t stray from the line.

With only 4 members attending on the Saturday and 3 on Sunday we did not progress as far as we would have hoped.

It was the first time in 16 years that I have been involved in building a curved wall, so if you’re a new member reading this and want the opportunity then grab it while you can.

Progress was slow, but fortunately Gregor has agreed to continue our good work (and his) and take the line ‘right round the bend’ and build it to full height. Perhaps Daan will have some free time to help. The rest of us look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour and to continuing the straight section beyond.

And for those who have been to South Mains this year, the Swartbles lambs are doing well and Kirsty is no longer bottle feeding the smallest one. In spite of the luscious grass planted by Daan, they still prefer to put their heads through the fence to taste what’s on the other side.
